Heritage Tree Program
The Heritage Tree Program 2021 commemorates the 125th Anniversary for The Village of Kenilworth! The goal of the program is for all residents, civic organizations, garden clubs, schools and churches to partner and plant 125 Heritage Trees in 2021. This initiative works to restore the canopy of old growth trees we have lost since the Village was founded in 1896, and to preserve the beauty, integrity, and stability of our verdant community for the future. Trees clean our air and water, reduce flooding, improve property values, create habitat for wildlife, and provide significant social and health benefits. Trees add immeasurable beauty and improve our quality of life.
The Village Board has provided some seed money for success, but everyone’s involvement is essential. There are many ways to get involved. First, residents or organizations can celebrate or honor special friends, family members, teachers, or an event by gifting “tribute” trees through the Heritage Tree Program for planting along parkways, playgrounds and in parkland settings. To donate a tree, please complete the attached form and return it to Village Hall. Donations may also be made online with a credit card here. Please note that any credit card transaction will incur a 2.7% convenience fee. Tree selections in this program are diverse and suitable for a variety of locations. Monthly, we will feature these gifted “tribute trees” in a little corner of the Village e-newsletter, as we gain momentum with the program.
The Heritage Tree Program is also rooted in education to help Kenilworth residents choose appropriate and sustainable trees for their own properties. Through collaboration, residents can tap into local resources from the Chicago Botanic Garden and the Morton Arboretum to foster better understanding and informed choices. Another way to participate in the Heritage Tree Program is to plant a tree on your own property. Once you have planted the tree, learn how to be a “tree champion” with the right watering, maintenance, and mulching. Help us keep track of The Heritage Tree Program momentum! Take a photo and share it with us at by emailing it to email@example.com. Every tree planted in the Village counts toward our goal of 125 Heritage Trees for 2021!
The Heritage Tree Program will coordinate indoor classroom opportunities for Sears School students, outdoor “classroom” opportunities for Scouts, residents and families to gather knowledge and strategies to restore and enhance the diversity of our local trees. Legacy stewards such as the Kenilworth Park District and Kenilworth Beautification are valued community partners in this initiative. Keep an eye on the Village email blasts – more information and opportunities for learning to come!
We ask for your support of the Heritage Tree Program, so that we can build momentum and bring the entire community together — residents and organizations — standing together under one great canopy that enhances quality of life for all who enjoy our beautiful Village. We welcome hearing from you and look forward to celebrating the 125th year of Kenilworth as we continue to enhance the community for generations to come. Questions or comments may be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org. Special thanks to residents Eric Britton for the Heritage Tree Program’s graphics and to Cris Guthrie for managing the Program’s social media.
